Verdict on the Xiaomi Poco F4 GT – Impressive for daily use but lacking as a gaming smartphone –

The Poco F4 GT offers a lot of smartphone for a cheap price. We were very pleased to find a 120W charger already included with the Xiaomi phone.

While the Poco F4 GT is an excellent mid-range smartphone for price-conscious gamers, the F4 GT is not a true gaming smartphone, in our opinion. In this article, we will explore the reasons for our verdict on the Xiaomi phone.

The Poco F4 GT from Xiaomi’s smartphone forge offers exceptional specifications at a price of just 605 USD (MSRP). The Poco phone features a 120-Hz OLED panel with a brightness of almost 1000 nits, 120W fast charging, a quad speaker system, Wi-Fi 6E as well as a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. At its price point, finding this much functionality is difficult – particularly when considering that the street price of the Poco phone appears to now match the early bird promotion (~500 USD).

On paper, the Poco F4 GT is a smartphone made for gaming – and in this category, it offers a worse long-term performance compared to its gaming competitors. Unlike “true” gaming smartphones such as the Nubia RedMagic 7 or the Asus ROG Phone 5s Pro, the Poco F4 GT lacks an integrated or attachable fan, leading to serious consequences. Aside from the considerable heat development on the surfaces, the high core temperatures result in inconsistent performance and throttling of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. As our gaming tests show, this can be particularly troublesome in HFR titles – here, the Asus ROG Phone 5 offers a much more consistent performance at frame rates in excess of 100 FPS.

Although with a capacity of 4700 mAh, the battery is sufficiently dimensioned for the 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels, the Poco F4 GT is not exactly energy efficient due to the heat development. Thus, we advise against gaming sessions without a power bank.

If you are interested in the excellent mid-range smartphone, we recommend a look at our in-depth review of the Poco F4 GT for a more detailed impression of the Xiaomi gaming smartphone.

I have always been very passionately interested in mobile technologies, especially smartphones. Being a tech enthusiast means the half-life of my devices isn’t exactly long, and being the latest hardware is not enough to suffice as the manufacturer and operating system play a minor role – the most important aspect for me is that the device is state-of-the-art. After posting for Mobi Test I joined Notebookcheck in 2016, where I have been pursuing my enthusiasm for technology by reviewing the latest smartphone, tablet, and accessory trends.
